Devon named as the best place to live in England

Country Life voted Devon as the best county to live in.... but you already knew that. If you don't live here, coming on holiday is the next best thing.

Devon's rolling landscapes, feted heritage sites and cosy fireside pubs have made it the best place in the country to live, according to a wide-ranging survey by Country Life Magazine.

To those who live there, it's probably no secret, but the study found that those living in the county simply enjoy a better quality of life than anywhere else in England.

The third biggest county enjoys a greater number of farm shops and local butchers, has the best recycling rate and impeccable environmental credentials.

It has an array of good pubs and can boast the beauty of Dartmoor as well as National Parks.

The magazine rated each county on how they performed across 19 categories, including health, schools, environment, heritage. It also looked at village green, the quality of the local pubs and the number of residents in Who's Who.

Devon came top in five categories as the best for green credentials, local food, pubs, heritage and landscape. "Few counties can match the variety that Devon manages to pack inside its borders," said Mark Hedges, the magazine's editor. "Devon has always had a special place in many people's hearts as a favourite place for family holidays, to escape city life, and to retire. Our survey shows that Devon really does deliver the dream."

It is only the second time Country Life, which is published today, has carried out the survey. The previous occasion was in 2003, when Devon again took the top place.

Improving everything all the time

In 2011 we managed to replace every old mattress, every old sofa, all the TV's, 18 bathrooms, several kitchens, create a whole new top standard 12 bed cottage, insulate every roof, put in new double glazing, replace all the outdoor furniture and BBQs, replace all the cutlery & crockery, nearly half of the white goods, and nearly all of the linen and curtains.... We were busy!

In 2012 the Ashcombe Cottages are in for even more great improvements:

A redesigned Woodhouse Farm communal area, a new Woodhouse Farm carpark, woodchip heating systems, improved children's play areas, solar power systems, more new bathrooms and kitchens and new lighting. And finally some decking outside Badger Cottage:

Due to a family swapping to the Cider Barn as they needed even more room - the excellent Rainbow Cottage is now available for the Christmas period. Near to the indoor swimming pool, the cottage sleeps 14 people in 7 bedrooms. So that's just £1,491 or £106 per person for a week!

Nut Tree Farm was completed in March 2010 and can accommodate up to 28 people - in style! A summer outdoor swimming pool and gas BBQ are just a couple of the features available. Perfect for big family reunions.

Adventure Rehab are now using Ashcombe Country Cottages for their courses. They help people recovering from traumatic injuries or illness, both civilians and military. The team draws together physiotherapy, unobtrusive psychology, prosthetics and adventure professionals to provide outdoor rehab activities - Ashcombe is perfect for this with onsite indoor & outdoor pools, Ashcombe Adventure centre, local landscape including Dartmoor & the beaches

Badger Cottage is rated 5 stars by English Country Cottages and sleeps 12. It is has a superb open-plan kitchen and dining room, great sitting room and a recreation room with table football and a further flatscreen TV for children. The cottage has a big garden, off-street parking and is a short walk from the indoor swimming pool at Woodhouse Farm. Needless to say it is booking up fast.

Ashcombe is a diversified estate involved in farming, out-door activity centre, holiday cottages and much more. Above all it is one of the most beautiful places in the world and capivates locals and visitors throughout the year.
